If you haven't seen
vinyl flooring for a while, you'll be very pleasantly surprised. The vinyl sheet flooring of today has a lot of styles, with wood, stone, and tile looks. You'll find checkerboards, geometrics, florals, chevrons, herringbones, and Roman-themed encaustic styles. Add benefits like durability, easy-care, waterproof properties, and a simple installation, and you have another high-value, affordable product.
- Durability. This is a multi-layered product, so, by nature, it's already firm. The top wear layer comes in a range of thicknesses, but if you're installing in a heavily trafficked room or commercial space, go as high as 20-mils. Another protective coating is on top of the wear layer, and the floor is well-guarded against scratches and scuffs.
- Low maintenance. All this requires regular sweeping (daily, if possible) and periodic mopping with a manufacturer-approved cleaner. Always avoid waxy, shine-promoting cleaners as they can dull the floor. If you feel you need more shine, seek the advice of a flooring professional.
- Easy installation. Some find the sheets easier to install since there are no seams with which to contend. Installation can be glue-down or loose-lay, where the sheet hovers over the subfloor with no nails or glue. Only fiberglass backings should be used with a loose-lay installation, while both foam and felt backings need to be permanently glued.
